Course Overview
The Academia Consultants is offering the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Healthcare Practice (Nursing and Healthcare Assistant). This qualification is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the healthcare sector. The qualification aims to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. Students on the course will be equipped with the Healthcare Practice skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global health and social care environment. The qualification offers:
- Insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within the healthcare sector, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels.
- Knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organizations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values.
- Opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in healthcare, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration or a related area.
- Opportunities for students to develop the skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful working lives.
- An understanding of the local, regional and global context of healthcare practice, management and health promotion and, for those students with a global outlook, to aspire to international career pathways.
- To provide students with opportunities to address contemporary health and care issues facing the sector, and society at large, with particular emphasis on integrated and compassionate care, and person-centred approaches to providing healthcare to individuals across their lifespan.
Course Information
The objectives of the Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Healthcare are as follows:
- To offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic aspirations.
- To provide students with the context in which to consider professional ethics and their relation to personal, professional and statutory responsibilities within the industry.
- To Provide a thorough grounding in healthcare principles and a degree of specialism at Level 4 that leads the student to a range of specialist progression pathways at Level 5 relating to individual professions within the healthcare sector.
- To equip individuals with sector-relevant acumen, understanding and healthcare practice skills for success in a range of the healthcare, health promotion, navigation and non-clinical supervisory or lower management roles in healthcare.
- To enable progression to a university degree by supporting the development of appropriate academic study skills.
- To provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in healthcare sector.
Students who wish to undertake the HND programme must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Have at least a level 3 qualification in their specialist subject area or related qualifications such as:
- BTEC Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care.
- GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject with adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
- Another related level 3 qualifications.
- Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution.
- Have an excellent command of the English language and must be proficient in numeracy to benefit from studying for the programme. All students will be required to obtain an acceptable grade in their approved English language and numeracy test (GCSE or equivalent).
- In addition, pass our internal Initial Assessment Numeracy and Literacy test and achieve at CEFR-Level B2 and show competence in academic writing.
- Have an enhanced DBS Certificate.
The entire programme is taught in English and students must demonstrate their ability to speak and write in English proficiently. Applicants whose primary qualification was obtained in a non-English speaking country may also achieve an English test such as IELTS 5.5 or other equivalent tests as defined by regulators.
The qualification is delivered using a variety of teaching and learning methods to link theory with practice. These include face-to-face lectures, one-to-one tutorials, workplace learning, workshops and discussions and group work. Students are expected to undertake independent studies and research throughout the programme.
Students are assessed with centre designed assignments which are evidenced in writing (Reports, Essays, Reflective accounts) or orally in Professional discussions and individual oral PowerPoint presentations with emphasis on practical application of the assessment criteria, providing a realistic scenario for learners to adopt, making maximum use of work-related practical experience and reflecting typical practice in the sector concerned.
The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Healthcare Practice provides opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge and practical skills in the workplace. This is achieved by demonstrating 450 hours of work placement or part-time employment experience in two health and social care sectors providing direct care to clients
The qualification allows progression into or within employment in the healthcare sector, either directly on achievement of the award or following further study to degree level. Job roles may include Senior care assistant, senior support worker in a range of health and social care settings, pathway tracker, integrated support worker, care navigator or coordinator or lower managerial, coordinator and supervisory roles in social administration, operation and support services, e.g. information, office, estates, advice and guidance services senior healthcare support/assistant or nursing assistant/auxiliary roles in a range of areas of specialism, e.g. adult and community nursing, clinical support, midwifery support, and rehabilitation services.
Learners studying the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Healthcare Practice (RQF) should be able to progress to the third year of an undergraduate degree. Higher education opportunities include

Students must achieve a minimum of 120 credits) on their programme of learning to be awarded a BTEC Level 4 HNC and a minimum of 240 credits to be awarded a BTEC Level 5 HND.
